Small Garden
Small Cottage Garden, Cambridgeshire
Brief: to bring to life two small connected spaces at the back of a Victorian cottage which the client didn’t know what to do with.
Solution: the first space was created as a small courtyard using reclaimed bricks as flooring, a mini sun trap ideal for growing plants and a few select vegetables in pots.
In the second, an overgrown open area which held the bins was fenced in and designed around a raised rectangular bed made of reclaimed bricks and tiles. Surrounded by gravel, with climbing roses planted on trellis along the fence, this cottage garden scheme made the most of the sunny aspect. In the new raised bed, foxgloves, cornflowers and geraniums provided height and colour as well as a haven for bees.
Built into the design was a Yorkstone gin and tonic table for the client to sit and enjoy a drink as the sun went down.
