Mixed Border, Kent

Brief: to create a planting design for a tricky area - a long strip of soil, a mere 50 cm that ran along the fence line. For that reason, it had been pretty much ignored and yet represented a great opportunity to brighten up the edge of the patio and bring in pollinators.

Solution: the creation of a border with all year interest to include evergreens, grasses, spring bulbs and utilising perennials to provide a succession of blooms. The colour scheme included pinks, yellows, whites and blues – plants that would attract the bees and other pollinating insects. Evergreen scented climbers were recommended as a good option to break up the expanse of the fencing and to enhance the experience of sitting on the adjacent patio area on a summer’s evening … quite a lot to pack into a small space!

This was the result ….
